Dr Andrew Richford

Dr Richford’s doctoral research concerned the ecology and population dynamics of Jackdaws nesting on an island off the west coast of Wales, UK. He then spent many years as a senior commissioning editor for Academic Press, Poyser and Elsevier as a specialist in natural history and ornithology. As a journal publisher, he managed many life science titles including a number for learned societies such as the Association for the study of Animal Behaviour, the Linnean Society of London, the Fisheries Society of the British Isles, and the Zoological Society of London. Dr Richford now works as an editorial services consultant and writer for the UK scientific publishing industry and authors publishing in the life sciences. As a specialist in ecology and the environment, he has wide expertise in zoology, botany, marine biology, and agriculture. Dr Richford began editing for the Edanz group in 2010.

Dr Lai qualified in medicine and underwent training in internal medicine, followed by specialization in Oncology. Dr Lai was later responsible for clinical research programs of novel signal disrupting agents for solid tumors and hematological malignancies at a global pharmaceutical company. He has extensive experience in the process of drug development, from phase 1 dose-escalation studies to large-scale, phase 3 randomized controlled trials and post marketing surveys. In addition, he is also experienced in regulatory and health economic issues related to pharmaceutical products. Dr Lai is an experienced editor and began editing for the Edanz Group in 2010.

Mr Aaron Froese

Mr Froese is a plasma physicist who specializes in particle-in-cell simulation of experimental plasma devices. His Master's thesis was an examination of the nonlinear effects in inductively coupled plasmas. His current Ph.D. studies focus on parallel heat transport in the scrape-off layer of tokamaks. He has several publications in peer-reviewed journals and is an experienced editor of scientific papers and presentations. Mr Froese began working for the Edanz Group in 2010.

Dr Cummins teaches Anatomy, Human Biology and Reproductive Biotechnology at Murdoch University in Western Australia. He has extensive experience in reproductive biology and assisted conception techniques such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). He sits on the editorial board of several top journals, including Human Reproduction and Reproductive Biotechnology Online, and chairs the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Reproductive Technology Council of Western Australia (the government body overseeing IVF clinics). He has been involved in professional editing for 10 years and has worked on about 2500 papers. He has many colleagues and friends in Asia and was a Visiting Professor at Osaka University's Genome Information Research Center in Japan in 2005. Assoc Prof Cummins began editing for the Edanz Group in 2009.

Dr Allan Easteal

Dr Easteal is a chemist with particular experience in macromolecular science. His PhD topic was on the diffusion potentials in molten salts, but for the past 20 years his research has been primarily on a broad range of macromolecular science topics. Dr Easteal has been a Visiting Professor at Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana, United States, and the Catholic University of America, Washington DC, United States, and from 1982 to 1986 he was a Research Fellow in the (then) Research School of Physical Sciences, Australian National University, Canberra, ACT, Australia. Since 1966, he has been a staff member of the Chemistry Department, University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand. Dr Easteal’s research expertise includes utilization of naturally occurring polymers as source materials for development of new materials, charge- and mass-transport mechanisms in polyelectrolyte gels, microfibril reinforced composites, biodegradable composites based on natural fibers, conducting polymer/thermoplastic blends and composites, high performance emulsion wood adhesives, barrier coatings, and treatment/coating systems for photostabilization of timber. Dr Easteal began working for the Edanz Group in 2008.

Dr McGowan has won many awards during his career, including in 2003 the EU Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship. He has worked in laboratories investigating the molecular mechanisms in Parkinson’s disease as well as those involved in Huntington’s disease, combining laser micro-dissection, microarray analysis and proteomics. Further study involved micro-array gene expression analysis of molecular processes occurring during normal aging and how these are affected by mental exercise. Dr. McGowan has an in-depth knowledge of neurodegenerative diseases, neural function, marine zoology, molecular and cellular biology and protein biochemistry, along with extensive multi-disciplinary laboratory experience of contemporary and traditional techniques including proteomics, functional genomics and cell imaging. His excellent written and oral communication skills are demonstrated by several first author publications. From 2005 to October 2006, Dr. McGowan was an Associate Editor at Nature Reviews Neuroscience before becoming a full-time editor for Edanz Editing. Dr. McGowan is the Edanz Group Science Director.

Prof Fee is a professor of chemical engineering at the University of Canterbury, with expertise particularly in biotechnology, biochemical and biomolecular engineering. His PhD topic was on blood flow disturbances in the carotid artery and their links to atherosclerosis. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Waterloo, Canada, in 1989/90, working on membrane ultrafiltration. He then returned to NZ as a lecturer at the University of Waikato, and a biochemical engineer at the Meat Industry Research Institute of New Zealand (MIRINZ). A full-time lecturer at the University of Waikato from 1996, he was head of the Department of Materials and Process Engineering from 2003 until 2006, when he took up a chair in chemical engineering at the University of Canterbury. Prof Fee has a wide range of experience in protein purification, protein PEGylation, membrane separations and process chromatography, and has worked in controlled drug delivery, microencapsulation and high-value dairy protein purifications. He is Director of the Biomolecular Interactions Centre at the University of Canterbury and has expertise in surface plasmon resonance. Prof Fee has published over 160 journal articles, book chapters, conference papers, patents and industrial research reports across a wide range of chemical engineering topics. Prof Fee began working with Edanz Editing as an editor in fields associated with chemical engineering and biotechnology in 2008.

Assoc Prof Michael Dewe retired in December 2006 as University of Canterbury IT Director and is currently an Adjunct Assoc Prof and a consultant to the Information and Communication Technology industry. Prior to his position as University IT Director, he was an Assoc Prof (Reader) in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Research interests focused on advanced instrumentation and data acquisition systems with specific applications to real-time power quality monitoring (harmonic analysis) and seismic earthquake measurement and recording. He lectured in engineering design, computer hardware, instrumentation, and engineering management. His early career was as an electronic systems engineer, designing flight and ground systems for satellites and launch vehicles for European Space Projects. A systems engineer, Assoc Prof Dewe has wide experience in applications of engineering to various scientific disciplines. He began working with the Edanz Group in 2008.

Dr David Maree

Dr Allen is a biologist with particular experience in the fields of neuroscience, developmental biology and genetics. His PhD topic involved molecular genetic analysis of mouse mutations that affect limb development. From 1996 to 2004, Dr. Allen was a researcher at the Department of Neurobiology, Babraham Institute, Cambridge, UK. Dr Allen’s research skills and techniques include DNA/RNA manipulation and purification/isolation, electrophoreses, PCR, cloning, all blottings, library screening, genetic mapping, design and construction of transgenes, artificial chromosome engineering, design and construction of vectors for gene targeting in ES cells, cell culture, histological techniques, mouse behavioral analysis, small animal surgery, and bioinformatic tools such as sequence databases and analysis tools. Dr Matthew Polson

Dr Polson's chemistry career has focused on the study of ruthenium complexes. His first Postdoctoral Fellowship was in Canada, where he moved to larger arrays, attempting to make antennae to collect solar energy. His second post-doctoral fellowship in Italy involved time-resolved absorption studies on new iridium complexes. In his third fellowship, in New Zealand, he focused on the ruthenium complexes as catalysts for the oxidation of water and their characterization by X-ray crystallography. His current position, since June 2009, is Research Laboratory Technician at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. Dr Polson's skills include the synthesis and characterization of novel complexes through NMR, mass spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography, and he has extensive experience in chromatography. He also has experience with many photophysical techniques such as electronic absorption and emission spectroscopies, electrochemistry, transient absorption spectroscopy, Raman and IR spectroscopy and the spectroelectrochemistry of the above techniques. Dr Polson has written more than 30 peer-reviewed research articles for a wide variety of journals. Dr Polson began working with Edanz Editing in 2008.

Dr Alison Sherwin

Dr Smith’s PhD thesis was entitled “The Role of PPARalpha in Modulating Glucose Tolerance and Insulin Action using In Vivo Models of Insulin Resistance”. Dr Smith has been a Research Assistant at the Queen Mary, University of London’s Institute of Cellular and Molecular Sciences, where he focused on the biochemistry of diabetes and related metabolic disorders. He has also been a Research Fellow at the London Sport Institute, part of Middlesex University. Dr Smith has studied editing and design skills in relation to publication at the London School of Journalism, and is now a full-time medical writer. Dr Smith gained extensive experience in medical and scientific communications while employed at the internationally recognized agency Medicus International, where he worked on a range of medical communications projects for several well-known pharmaceutical companies. He joined the Edanz Group in 2006, where he is able to apply his wide research background and expertise in the medical communications sector in assisting clients to achieve their publication goals.

For 10 years, Dr Stewart was a Post-Doctoral Research Scientist at Edinburgh and Glasgow Universities, involved in molecular biology research that included sequencing and analysis of various genes for genome projects. Dr Stewart is an experienced bioinformatics analyst with specific experience in DNA/protein sequence data. From 2001 to 2007, Dr Stewart was a Senior Analyst in Thomson Scientific’s GENESEQ team based in Glasgow. Dr Stewart began as an editor for Edanz Editing in 2007, working in molecular biology fields with an emphasis on genomics.

Dr Bianca Kuipers

In her PhD research, Dr Kuipers investigated the microbial degradation of organic environmental contaminants (in particular PCBs and PAHs), and developed instrumental methods to analyze the resulting products (mainly by using GC/MS and HPLC). Dr Kuipers’ core scientific background is in analytical environmental chemistry, with an emphasis on the analysis and remediation of organic compounds. Dr Kuipers also edits in the fields of material sciences. Dr Kuipers has authored many refereed publications as well as abstracts and presentations. She has also acted as a referee for journal submissions, and edited numerous journal articles as well as Masters and PhD theses. Dr Kuipers lives in Vancouver, Canada, and has worked as an English editor for Edanz Editing since 2002.

Dr Devon is a biologist with a special interest in neuroscience and genetics. She is a graduate of the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, and obtained her PhD in 1996 from the University of Edinburgh, UK, in the genetics of psychiatric illness. She undertook postdoctoral research on a rare, inherited form of Motor Neurone Disease (Lou Gehrig's Disease) in Vancouver, Canada, and then started her own research group back in Edinburgh, UK, investigating the genetics, cell biology and biochemistry of motor neurone disease. She is a co-founder of the Euan MacDonald Centre for Motor Neurone Disease Research at the University of Edinburgh. Dr Devon has written over 50 research papers, book chapters, reviews and successful grant applications, and has peer-reviewed manuscripts for molecular biology journals. Dr Rider is a research scientist resident in Cambridge, United Kingdom, where he is involved in developing biological therapeutics for respiratory and inflammatory diseases for a multinational pharmaceutical company. For his PhD, he investigated the role of the inflammatory microenvironment on T cell function in rheumatoid arthritis. Dr Rider was a post-doctoral fellow in the UK and Singapore, studying a diverse range of cell biology and immunology topics, including mesenchymal and hematopoietic stem cells. Dr Cooke’s scientific background is in immunology, with an emphasis on human immune responses to organ transplants. His PhD focused on the functional significance of newly identified xenoantigens expressed by porcine endothelial cells. He has worked as a post-doctoral fellow for both the Arthritis and Rheumatism Council (ARC) and Cancer Research UK (CRUK). The main focus of his post-doctoral work was the engineering of antibody-based fusion proteins specifically targeted to cancer cells, as a novel from of therapy. Dr Cooke has technical expertise in the design and use of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), PCR and RT-PCR, primary cell culture, cellular cytotoxicity assays, DNA isolation, purification, sequencing and cloning, HPLC, radiolabelling techniques, kinetic analysis of antibody–antigen interactions, antibody isolation and purification and the use of phage display technology. He is also a qualified physiotherapist with extensive knowledge of human anatomy and physiology. Dr Cooke began working with the Edanz Group in 2009.

He is an experienced editor of conference proceedings for the New Zealand and Australian Societies of Soil Science. He is a past-President and Life Member of the New Zealand Society of Soil Science, and a past-editor of its newsletter. Dr Adams’ research interests cover many areas of soil and environmental science including the soil chemistry of macronutrients and micronutrients, soil fertility, soil/plant relationships in the New Zealand flora, pedology, soil resource assessment, biosolids disposal onto soils and water chemistry. Dr Nick Tucker trained in polymer technology at the Interdisciplinary Research Centre at the University of Bradford, and his research continues to be interdisciplinary, working across polymer technology and science, agriculture, industrial design and manufacturing. At present, his major focus is the development of methods of nanocomposite manufacture from crop origin materials for possible application in the manufacture of sustainable composites, menotic materials, and other ultra-high specific surface areas. Dr Tucker is a chartered engineer and a fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. His work in real-time computer control of reaction injection molding machines was the basis of his admission to charter membership in the British Computer Society. Currently, Dr Tucker leads a number of commercial biomaterials research collaborations at the New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research. Dr Tucker has extensive writing and publication experience. He has published 9 refereed journal papers, and has 9 patent and registered design applications, 4 books, and 2 book chapters, as well as 17 government and commercial reports and 8 magazine articles. Dr Laura Kuhar is a research scientist in the Precious and Base Metals Hydrometallurgy group of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in Perth, Australia. Dr Kuhar has always displayed an interest in writing and is currently a reviewer for the Minerals Engineering journal and a former assistant editor of the De Beers Science and Engineering Review. Dr Lees’ PhD research involved the synthesis and characterization of transition metal halide complexes dissolved in room-temperature ionic liquids. Her postdoctoral research involved carbonylation of organic solvents in ionic liquids at high temperature and pressure, using transition metal complexes as catalysts. Another postdoctoral position in Dublin, Ireland, involved the synthesis, spectroscopy and photophysical properties of ruthenium 4,4’-dicarboxy-2,2’ bipyridine triazole complexes and their application as dye-molecules in regenerative solar cells (Grätzel cells). Dr Lees has also been a lecturer at Trinity College Dublin, where she collaborated with Prof Paul Kruger on research into metal organic frameworks incorporating 4,4’-dicarboxy-2,2’ bipyridine and related ligands. Publications from this research have been highly cited. Dr Lees has published 10 peer-reviewed papers and has presented her research at numerous international conferences. Dr Shoemaker's scientific background is in pharmacology and toxicology with a focus on neurodegenerative diseases, endocrine disorders and gastroenterology. For her post-doctoral fellowship at Emory University, she studied the pathophysiology of enteric axons during the early stages of diabetes. Dr Raye is a molecular biologist employed by Monash University as a Research Fellow in the fast-changing field of stem cell biology. His doctoral thesis was entitled "An investigation into the status of porcine circovirus in Australia". Dr Raye is an experienced researcher and lecturer, at undergraduate and post-graduate levels. He also conducts independent research in the areas of molecular virology, inflammation and stem cell biology. His current work at Monash University involves creating embryonic stem cell lines with various reporter systems for use in small molecule drug screening assays. Dr Hodgson, an internationally renowned scientist and educator, is a Professor of Zoology lecturing in invertebrate biology, cell structure and function, animal reproduction, environmental physiology, marine biology and introductory microscopy. His interests are in reproductive biology, particularly in developmental processes in gametogenesis of invertebrates, structure and function of spermatozoa, comparative sperm structure and its application in taxonomy and evolutionary biology, reproductive biology/ecology of mollusks, and the physiology of spermatozoa. As well, estuarine biology, and the management of estuarine and intertidal resources, are fields in which Dr Hodgson carries out research. Dr Lundin's research focuses on the development of new materials for application in light emitting diodes, with a PhD entitled "Electroluminescent and Photoluminescent Properties of Metal-Based Compounds". Dr Lundin is currently employed as a post-doctoral research fellow at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, on a project involving application of metal-coordinated graphene complexes in electro-optic devices. Dr Lundin has experience in organic synthesis, inorganic synthesis, photophysical characterization (including UV-vis spectroscopy, electrochemistry, spectroelectrochemistry and fluorimetry), X-ray crystallography and fabrication and testing of prototype light emitting diodes. Dr Kraabel’s PhD was in experimental condensed matter. Since 1995 he has worked in research and development in both academia and industry. His specialties are condensed matter physics, optics (linear and nonlinear), and materials science. Dr Margaret Lutze

Dr Lutze's graduate work was in vision science. Her studies involved the assessment of changes in color vision with disease and the genetic basis of color vision. She worked alongside ophthalmologists during post-doctoral training and has experience with ophthalmological clinical activities and research. She later worked with an ophthalmologist studying diabetic retinopathy and other retinal diseases. Dr Lutze works as a language editor for a gastroenterology journal based in Beijing, China, and began working as an editor with the Edanz Group in 2009.

Dr Morris’s scientific background is oncology with an emphasis on radiobiology, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Dr Gorman is an active research geophysicist with both academic and industrial experience. A major focus of his research is the use of seismic imaging techniques to investigate geological processes and structures. His current research involves the investigation of seafloor geology using a range of geophysical techniques. Dr Taylor has been a lecturer in zoology, comparative physiology, and cell biology at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, since 1972. His interests span all physiological systems across a variety of taxa, including fish, crustaceans, mollusks, insects and spiders. Research themes include: Gas exchange and oxygen transport; morphology and hemodynamics of gills and circulatory systems; osmoregulation, acid-base balance and excretion; adaptation to marine, freshwater and terrestrial environments; the physiology of eggs and embryos and fertilization; stress associated with fishing, aquaculture and live transport; and eco-toxicity of heavy metals. Dr Taylor is experienced in a range of instrumentation and analyses including: microscopy (DIC, fluorescence, TEM, SEM, X-ray microprobe); corrosion casting; respirometry; blood gas and acid-base status; osmotic, ionic, and metabolite concentrations of body fluids and waters; atomic absorption spectroscopy; radioactive tracers, viscometry; blood pressure and flow (pulsed Doppler); heart and ventilation rates; and electrophysiology. Dr Taylor’s research group has published numerous articles in the principal international journals of his field. He has served on the advisory board of journals and book series, is a reviewer for about 20 international journals, and is a member of several national and international scientific societies. Dr Forth is a physiologist with unique credentials in extreme environment physiology. She worked as Physiologist at the European Space Agency in international multi-disciplinary projects. She has dived with the British Marines, and conducted research in simulated microgravity on parabolic flights from Star City, Russia, for which she won the MIR award in 2003. She has won many other awards including the Colt Foundation fellowship. Her thesis, “Chemoreceptor Renin-Angiotensin System Activity and the Ventilatory Response to Acute Hypoxia, Hypercapnia and Exertional Hypoxia,” investigated associations between genetic polymorphisms and control of ventilation. Rebecca is a former Director for the final year UCL BSc course, Space Medicine and Extreme Environment Physiology. She was a research fellow between 2002 and 2008, and a consultant for the Science Media Centre since 2005. Dr Forth began working for the Edanz Group in 2008.

For three years, Dr Furness was a Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research, Glasgow, where she used extensive molecular genetic techniques to examine the factors influencing the growth of hematopoietic stem cells, with relevance to the development of cancers such as leukemia. Later Dr Furness was a researcher at Glasgow University where she analyzed the energetic requirements of seabirds, using field observations, analysis of radioisotopes from blood samples and metabolic monitoring of birds in respirometers. Dr Furness is a scientific editor with extensive experience of abstracting, indexing and editing scientific papers on a wide range of topics including general medicine, pharmacology and genetics, with personal experience of active scientific research and the publishing of research papers. Dr Fox completed a PhD in microbiology at the University of Oxford, investigating novel phase variable LPS biosynthetic genes in Haemophilus influenzae. She then spent five years as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Queensland, Australia, focusing on the role of DNA methyltransferases in gene regulation in bacterial pathogens. Other projects included the design and development of live, attenuated vaccines for veterinary pathogens. She has many first-author publications in high-ranking journals in the area of microbial pathogenesis. Dr Fox is now a full-time editor, with extensive editing experience in a broad range of biological disciplines including molecular biology, microbiology, biotechnology, genomics, epidemiology, biochemistry and medicine. Dr Colton's research background in biochemistry focused on lipid biochemical pathways in marine invertebrates and mammalian skin. His doctoral thesis involved describing the biochemical pathways for sebaceous lipid production in the genus Equus through radio-label, structural analysis, and comparative biochemical studies. His postdoctoral work involved relating the giant ring lactones of equine sebum to the epidermal water barrier of mammalian skin. Dr Colton is a generalist scientist and, as a college professor, taught courses from inorganic and organic chemistry to biochemistry and molecular biology to nuclear physics and astronomy. He has advised and edited numerous theses, papers, and articles for colleagues and students. He has published 13 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has been an active editor since 2007. Mr MacDonald is an experienced information scientist in the electronic and electrical engineering field. Following postgraduate research in optical fiber laser gyroscopes, he worked for Thomson Scientific from 1994 to 2007 as an indexer and abstractor of academic and scientific papers for the Inspec database, specializing in electronics, optoelectronics and semiconductor electronics, and later telecommunications. He then worked in a patent analyst role for Thomson, providing content for the Derwent World Patent Index, covering electronic materials and manufacturing, semiconductor devices and circuits and their manufacture, and electronic display technology including liquid crystal and electroluminescent displays. Dr Amber Sawyer’s research has involved evaluating novel polymeric and ceramic formulations of orthopedic bone cements, and investigating the mechanisms regulating mesenchymal stem cell adhesion to biomimetically-functionalized hydroxyapatite biomaterials for bone tissue engineering applications. Dr Sawyer’s training includes materials science, biomechanics, bone tissue engineering, cell culture, protein assays, histology, bone histomorphometry, and extensive animal work for orthotopic and ectopic models. She has received numerous awards for her research including Outstanding Graduate Student of the Year in Biomedical Engineering (2005). Dr Sawyer is a well-published first author and is a referee for several biomaterial-related international journals. From 2006 through 2008, she held a post-doctoral research position in Singapore with the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, A*STAR, studying the role of heparan sulfates in segmental bone repair. Dr Sawyer joined Edanz as an editor in early 2009.

Dr Forbes’s PhD thesis topic was physico-chemical processes at the aqueous/iron oxide interface for micronutrient and toxic heavy metal species, with special emphasis on the role of coordinated inorganic ligands in the adsorption process. He has published in international journals in the diverse fields of soil science, micronutrient cycling in grazed pastoral systems, physicochemical adsorption processes and modeling, environmental and analytical chemistry, and textile chemistry and processing. He was the co-recipient of a Silver Research medal from the respected Worshipful Company of Feltmakers of London for a scientific paper on aspects of wool processing. He also has an MBA from Canterbury University and currently provides administrative, copyediting and science-related expertise to the Head, Centre for Soil & Environmental Quality, Lincoln University in New Zealand. Dr Dean’s PhD thesis was titled “Endogenous Neural Excitation and Inhibition and the Evolution of Preterm Brain Injury.” Dr Dean is presently a post-doctoral research fellow in fields related to neuroscience. He has experience in large animal and fetal surgery techniques, including catheter and electrode placement and animal post-mortem and dissections, as well as in stereotaxic placement of microdialysis and laser Doppler probes. In electrophysiology, Dr Dean is skilled in the instrumentation, recording, and analysis of electrophysiological data in vivo, including cortical EEG spike wave and seizure activity, cerebral impedance, cerebral near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), cerebral laser Doppler, temperature, ECG, EMG, blood pressure, ultrasonic blood flow measurement, and fetal breathing movements. He possesses training in systems physiology, as well as an understanding of the complex and unique cardiovascular and central nervous system responses. In molecular fields, Dr Dean covers the various blot analysis techniques, primer design and sequence analysis, mRNA and protein extractions, RT-PCR and gel electrophoresis. Histology including staining and analysis of brain tissue and imaging and the associated laboratory skills are all areas in which Dr Dean has experience. Dr Wadsworth’s scientific background is pharmacology/microbiology with experience in both basic and clinical research. Dr. Wadsworth’s technical skills include fluorescence technology, microbiological and molecular biological techniques, sub-cellular fractionation and immunological techniques. Dr Mosi’s PhD studies involved the mechanism of reaction of two alpha glycosyltransferases, glycogen phosphorylase and cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase, through the use of modified substrates and inhibitors. Dr Mosi is a senior research scientist with eight years’ experience in pharmaceutical drug research. She has developed and implemented novel assays for the purpose of the identification of inhibitors of metallo-enzymes as antibacterials and inhibitors of cysteine proteases for the treatment of cancer. Dr Mosi has applied expertise in enzymology, receptor based cell biology, drug metabolism and protein purification and production. As well, she has designed and standardized systems and procedures for interpreting scientific results. She also has a sound knowledge of FDA guidelines and is trained in GLP and GMP procedures. Dr Mosi is a past member of the Drug Information Association, International Society for the Study of Xenobiotics, Society for Biomolecular Screening, American Society of Microbiology, and the Canadian Society of Chemistry. As first author of 10 published, peer reviewed manuscripts, and as editor of numerous other papers in fields of biology, biochemistry, chemistry and pharmacology, Dr Mosi brings an extensive writing background to her editing work for Edanz Editing.

Dr Price has a background in the field of environmental science and her research interests cover soil trace gas exchange (methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide), soil biology and biochemistry and the cycling of major elements such as carbon and nitrogen. Her PhD studies, which involved intensive field, laboratory and modeling, focused on understanding methane oxidation in a pristine indigenous forest soil. Dr Price was awarded a New Zealand Science and Technology Postdoctoral Fellowship, being involved in regular field measurements as well as modelling of soil methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide exchange from a regenerating sequence of native scrub. Dr Hughes is currently a project environmental scientist at ENSR Australia, a consulting firm that advises the mineral exploration industry. Dr Hughes’ PhD research was focused on the effects of past climate change on landscape evolution and ecosystem dynamics, while his Masters research was based on quantitative modeling of soil landscapes. Prof. Haase is a mathematical physicist with diverse interests ranging from astronomy to quantum mechanics, but specialising in the area of symmetries in nature and the applications of algebras and group theory to physical systems. After a postdoctoral position at the Universtat Wien, Austria, he was awarded a fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung in 1985 studying quasicrystals at the Universitat Tubingen, Germany. As principal researcher from 1990 to 1993 at the Centro Internacional de Fisica in Bogota,Colombia, his research interests extended to the applications of the non-compact symplectic group to quantum dots, q-deformed quantum algebras and groups applied to mass generation, and fullerenes. From 1994 to 2004 he became associate professor at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. He returned to his native New Zealand to pursue research into the applications of geometric algebras in physics. Dr David Robinson is a Senior Fellow in Mathematics at the University of Canterbury, where he has lectured since 1962. Dr Andrew Richford

Dr. Mündermann’s scientific background is biomechanics with an emphasis on degenerative joint disease and joint loading. For her PhD, she investigated mechanics of running with different types of foot orthoses and received the Chancellors' Gold Medal for her dissertation. As a Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University, she focused on mechanical and biological factors in the initiation and progression of osteoarthritis. Dr. Mündermann is currently holds a part-time Senior Research Fellow at the University of Otago, New Zealand. Dr. Mündermann's technical skills include motion analysis, inverse dynamics, force measurements, electromyography, pressure measurements, MR imaging and western blots. She has written numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, acted as a reviewer for several journals and has experience in medical writing in a wide range of topics including sport science, rheumatology, orthopaedics, biomedical engineering, biomechanics, obesity, rehabilitation, physiotherapy and sport injuries. Dr. de Boo is a physiologist with a particular interest in fetal growth and metabolism. Her PhD thesis was entitled “Aspects of Nitrogen Metabolism in Intrauterine Growth Restriction” – focusing primarily on urea cycle disorders in growth restricted human neonates and fetal sheep. She has since completed a postdoctoral study on the development of intrauterine treatments for Intrauterine Growth Restriction by hormonal supplementation. Dr. Diwakarla’s PhD thesis involved the use of primary cerebellar granule cell cultures to monitor changes in mitochondrial function and cellular homeostasis after apoptotic injury (excitotoxicity, oxidative stress and trophic factor withdrawal). Her project examined the cellular responses of neurones to a range of insults focusing largely on the activation/recruitment of apoptotic proteins involved both upstream and downstream of the apoptotic pathway. Currently, Dr. Diwakarla, who was born in Australia, is a Post Doctoral scientist in the Neuropeptides laboratory at the Florey Neuroscience Institutes were she is monitoring neurogenesis during fetal development and determining the signaling pathways involved in memory formation. She is also contributing to the investigation of neuroprotection in in vitro and in vivo models of ischemic damage. She began working as an editor with the Edanz Group in 2009.

Art Riddle has over ten years of experience in neuroscience research and writing and is currently in the final stages of his MD/PhD. His research has focused on neuro-development and mechanisms of neurological injury. He has performed studies on neurotoxicology and experience-dependent plasticity in the developing rodent. For his doctoral research Mr. Riddle is studying glial injury in small and preclinical animal models of hypoxic-ischemic preterm brain injury. In his studies he has become technically proficient in immunohistochemistry, slice culture, primary-cell culture, immunoblotting, protein purification, animal surgery, animal physiology, blood flow measurement, light/fluorescence/confocal microscopy, medical imaging and high-field magnetic resonance imaging. Dr. Burkala is currently employed at the University of Oklahoma in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. In early 2007 she undertook an internship with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in its South East Asia office, Bangkok, Thailand. Dr. Simmons’ background is in plant ecology with a special emphasis in restoration and wetland ecology. His PhD. research focused on forested wetland restoration in urban and urbanizing environments. He is currently a visiting scholar at the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, where he investigates impacts of livestock grazing on plant community composition, associated topoedaphic features, and biogeochemical processes. He has also conducted research on reclamation of severely disturbed rangelands. Dr. Simmons has published in international, peer-reviewed journals. He began working with the Edanz Group in 2009.

Mr. Prosser’s PhD is in animal physiology with an emphasis on cardiovascular function and disease; focusing on recently identified peptides of low molecular weight, observing their effects on cardiac function in both healthy and diseased hearts. The thesis includes techniques to elucidate the intracellular signaling pathways underlying the hemodynaimc responses observed, as well as the receptors and enzymes mediating their activity. Mr. Prosser has published 3 articles in international peer-reviewed journals, and presented his work at both national and international conferences. Mr Prosser began working for the Edanz Group in 2009.

Mr. White’s MSc research centered on the organometallic chemistry of various platinum group metals. His research focused on the synthesis and characterization of various cyclometallated gold and palladium compounds, using {Pt2S2} as a bridging and stabilizing ligand. Major characterization techniques used were ESMS, 13C nmr and x-ray diffraction studies. Brad has worked in a number of jobs in industry in the UK ranging from metal recovery and catalysis studies through to environmental consultancy. He is currently a technical specialist for the Europe, Middle East and Asia region for a leading water microbiology testing company. Brad began working as an editor with the Edanz Group in 2009.

Mr. Hoisak’s scientific background is in Medical Physics and Medical Imaging with an emphasis on imaging and therapy with ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. He is currently completing his PhD at the University of Toronto, where he is developing image analysis methods for assessing response of tumors to radiation therapy. His MSc work investigated the stability and time-dependent variability of the correlation between external surrogates of breathing and lung tumor motion, using X-ray fluoroscopy. He is experienced with many image analysis techniques including pattern recognition, texture analysis, rigid and deformable image registration. In addition, Mr. Hoisak has conducted research with medical imaging systems such as magnetic resonance (MR), 4D computed tomography (CT), megavoltage and cone-beam CT, positron emission tomography (PET), and has developed imaging phantoms and quality assurance procedures for both imaging and therapy systems. His research has investigated clinical problems in brain, lung, prostate and head and neck carcinomas, as well as sarcoma and lymphoma. Mr. Hoisak has written several peer-reviewed journal articles in Medical Imaging. Mr. Hoisak began working with the Edanz Group in 2009.

Mr Knight’s masters research focused on cognitive neuroscience and biopsychology research paradigms and techniques, including electroencephalography (EEG) and functional neuroimaging such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). At Auckland University he tutored undergraduate general psychology, neuroanatomy, cognitive and perceptual psychology, and biopsychology courses, and acted as EEG lab manager. In 2008 he was employed by the University of Otago as an editor and writer of research papers from 11 years of collected data from the fields of biology, zoology, climatology, marine systems, and ecology. Mr Knight is currently involved in PhD research at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, focusing on evolutionary and comparative psychology, and branching into zoology, anthropology, developmental psychology, animal behaviour and human ecology. Mr Knight has presented research at several international conferences and has published peer reviewed papers in psychology, zoology and ecology. Ms Korndoerfer's academic training is diverse. As well as studies in the Health and Environmental Sciences she also has experience in the fields of Nutrition, Urban Planning, Physical and Human Geography, and Ecology. For her Masters thesis she investigated the natural resource dependence of a rural Nigerian village, using a combination of social sciences, ecological, and remote sensing techniques. Mr. Kamen’s original research was into the presence of freshwater archaea in New York State Lakes using PCR and DNA sequencing. He has also worked in environmental assessments of soil and ground water contamination and the monitoring of chemicals in waterways. He presently works as a Senior microbiology analyst in New York using various microbiological and biochemical techniques as well as the MIDI system. A skilled musician, Thomas Rogers first specialized in the field of acoustics, at EMI Ltd (London) and then at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand (until 1977). He also worked as Senior Medical Physicist at the Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, Christchurch, New Zealand from 1962 until 1993. Mr Rogers has authored 15 reviewed papers in journals in medical physics and medicine. These were in fields including oncology, nuclear medicine, and ophthalmology endocrinology. He has also worked with applications of dedicated computers to areas of medicine. He has been a Member of the Australasian College of Medical Physical Scientists and Bioengineers in Medicine since 1969. Mr Rogers began working for the Edanz Group in 2009.

Peter Janiszewski is a PhD candidate in the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies at Queen's University in Canada. His MSc thesis focused on the alterations in body composition and metabolic/endocrine profiles of adult survivors of childhood leukemia. His recent studies and publications have involved topics including abdominal obesity, physical inactivity, cardiovascular disease, type-2 diabetes, sexual dysfunction, diet, exercise, and obesity management. Mr. Janiszewski has published 12 papers (6 as first-author) in journals such as Diabetes Care, Archives of Internal Medicine, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Journal of Sexual Medicine, Diabetologia, and the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. He has also first-authored a book chapter by the title, "Physical Activity in the Management of Visceral Obesity and Related Cardiometabolic Risk." Mr. Janiszewski’s current project is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and focuses on the effect of lifestyle modification on erectile dysfunction among obese and sedentary men. Mr. Pennycook was a member of a Japanese - New Zealand astrophysics project called "MOA" (Microlensing Observations in Astrophysics), which essentially looked for dark matter candidates using various techniques. Mr. Pennycook’s part of the project was published in the journal 'Astronomy'. His postgraduate papers were in modern physics - astrophysics, nuclear physics, quantum mechanics and relativity. Mr. Pennycook has taught astronomy and mathematics at university. As well, he has a background of studies in psychology and education at postgraduate levels. He has published in science education magazines, and climbing magazines. Indeed, he is an accomplished mountaineer, being co-founder and editor of New Zealand's most visited mountaineering information website www.mountainz.co.nz. Mr. Pennycook has been a full time editor for Edanz Editing since the beginning of 2007, and edits in fields related to physics, mathematics and the physical sciences.

Dr. Creasey is a senior post-doctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Paul Hunt, University of Edinburgh (genetics of artemisinin drug resistance in a rodent malaria model). Her special interests have been in the field of tropical medicine and tropical parasitic diseases, with training in the epidemiological aspects of disease. Her field experience in serology and microbiology involved a number of anti-parasitic drug trials in Africa. Later in Edinburgh, genetics and molecular biology were focused on. Dr. Creasey has the ability to communicating science in clear unambiguous language. During her career she has edited journal articles and PhD theses for scientists from China, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, and most African countries. Mr. Wallace’s background is in biochemistry and genetics. Later he focused on biomedical science/bioengineering, in particular nerve regeneration in both the peripheral and central nervous systems. His PhD focuses on tissue engineering for spinal cord injury and combines the use of novel nerves guides as cell carriers for the promotion of axonal regeneration. This project also looks at optimal cell isolation protocols for neural stem cells and optimisation of nerve conduits using hydrogels. He is experienced in tissue extraction and cell culture, viral transduction, electrospinning, scanning electron microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, freeze-dry processing of scaffolds, collagen isolation, RT-PCR, SDS-PAGE, southern blotting and histology. He has also worked as a Scientific Information Specialist for Thomson Scientific & Healthcare during 2004 - 2006. In this position he was responsible for was responsible for analysing and extracting information from life science and biomedical articles to allow for seamless access to current and retrospective multidisciplinary information from approximately 8,700 high impact research journals from the Web of Science. Kent Caldwell’s work has primarily dealt with animal sciences, especially herpetology. He also has considerable knowledge of vertebrate paleontology, particularly of taxonomy and evolutionary relationships of the Archosauria. He currently works as an ectotherm keeper for one of the largest zoos in the USA. Research he has participated in includes: radio telemetry tracking movements of Ornate Box Turtles (Terrapene ornata); nesting observations of Least Interior Terns (Sterna antillarum); dietary habits of Tentacled Snakes (Erpeton tentaculatum). His current research interests involves investigating prey-handling and feeding mechanics of extant sauropsid taxa, particularly the genera Drymarchon and Varanus, as well as the possible feeding mechanics of the extinct theropod Allosaurus fragilis. Mr Caldwell has been an editor with Edanz Editing since 2007.

Ms. Yuyitung, a Canadian native speaker of English has published technical papers in the field of forestry and has a background of creating user documentation, demonstrating software, and writing financial and IT reports. Mr Ewen-Street is a retired Member of Parliament in New Zealand. Besides politics, his areas of expertise include earth sciences, ecology, agriculture and education. His Masters thesis “Ecology and Experiential Learning: Education for a Healthy Planet” was an exploration of the role that self-esteem plays in behavioural change, with particular reference to environmental issues. He has also worked as a geologist, a certified organic farmer and a teacher of mathematics and outdoor education.

Mr. Hodgson completed his science degree in 2007 with a major in computer science and specialization in logic and computation. This course of study gave him a background in linguistics, philosophy and mathematics. His law degree focused on intellectual property rights with a particular emphasis on law in the IT field. He also covered topics on taxation and company law. Before joining the Japan office of the Edanz group in 2009, Mr. Hodgson worked in a development role for a software firm in Auckland, New Zealand.

Ms. Griffin has worked for an environmental consultancy specializing in ecology. As well as undertaking field survey, her work included the preparation of reports on ecological issues such as renewable energy schemes (hydro-electric and wind energy), river and estuarine projects, and commercial and residential developments. Editing and auditing of environmental assessments were part of her work. Her degree dissertation focused on the morphological development of salt marshes, and used analysis techniques including radiometric analysis and assessment of particle size. Prior to her environmental work career Ms Griffin worked as a nurse and midwife in a variety of health care settings.

After graduating from Melbourne University Mr. Parris entered the IT development industry and for 6 years was involved in a variety of programming, systems analysis, and technical writing, editing and documentation roles. Mr. Parris, who also speaks and writes German and Chinese, worked with language and editing fields before joining the Liwen Bianji (Edanz Editing – China) office in 2007 as an editor and IT staff. With his diversified science, IT and philosophy background, Mr. Parris edits in fields related with chemistry, engineering, information technology, robotics, software development, philosophy, and physics.
